It is claimed that Facebook, the world’s largest social media company, will soon change its name.
According to the American technology and media news site The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg will soon announce a new name for Facebook to reflect the increasing importance of the “metaverse” in the digital world, namely the “virtual real world”.
According to the information in the news, Facebook will continue as the name of the application and website, but the Facebook company, which also includes Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus, will be moved under a different parent company.
According to information from The Verge, this new name can be associated with Horizon, the online virtual reality video game developed by Facebook. In 2015, Google made a similar change and continued to work under the Alphabet umbrella organization.
Mark Zuckerberg wants people to no longer reduce Facebook to a simple social network. He made a speech last July on the issue saying:
“People who see us primarily as a social media company will see us as a ‘multiverse’ company. I think this will be the next big step for our company.”
With this name change, it aims to reflect Facebook’s goals in the field of virtual reality and the meta-universe in this digital universe, which is intended to be established as the Internet of the future. According to some experts, with this change, the group also aims to draw the background of many scandals that have damaged its brand image in recent years.
Facebook had already changed its name since its inception in February 2004. Originally the platform was called “The Facebook”.
