The International Monetary Fund reported that the economy in Afghanistan, where the Taliban came to power, could worsen and this would also affect the countries in the region.
In the economic outlook update announced by the IMF, it was noted that Afghanistan’s economy may contract by 30 percent this year, and that this situation may trigger an asylum crisis that will affect Turkey and Europe as well as neighboring countries.
“It can lead to humanitarian crises.”
In the IMF’s outlook report goes as:
“Afghanistan’s economy is dependent on foreign aid and facing severe financial and balance of payments crisis. The resulting decline in living standards is pushing millions into poverty. This could lead to a humanitarian crisis.”
The IMF noted that the chaos in Afghanistan was “fostering an increase in Afghan refugees” although the organization did not make any predictions about the potential impact on the numbers in this report.
IMF also talked about the possible consequences in the report:
“A massive influx of refugees could put a strain on the public resources of host countries, trigger labor market pressures, and spark social tensions, underlining the international community’s need for assistance.”
