There have been 3 weeks since the beginning of the education year and more than 50 classrooms have been isolated due to COVID-19 cases in Mersin. Mahmut Sümbül, the president of ‘Eğitim Sen’ Foundation Mersin Branch made evaluations about the number of cases in schools, in the city and the unregarded measures.
Sümbül mentioned that authorities discredit the public schools by not taking the necessary measures against the pandemic; hence students were encouraged to go to private schools. Sümbül also underlined that Eğitim Sen foundation already published a list of suggestions on the measures even before the education year started yet none of these suggestions were considered.
Emphasizing that Eğitim Sen is the only foundation that shared the true number of cases with the public during the pandemic period, Sümbül said:
“Our aim is not to reveal a pessimistic picture but to mirror the truth, thus correct detection and measures could be taken. COVID-19 cases are increasing day by day at Mersin city. The Ministry of National Education does not allocate enough budget against the epidemic. Most of the schools do not have enough personnel to provide hygiene. This is really a big problem. The number of cases in schools also are gradually increasing, They are trying to take precautions by closing classes in schools. If the situation continues to be the same we will talk about closing schools. It will be difficult to leave schools open with these methods. This is a great risk.”
