The studies initiated for the rehabilitation of the rocks located in the slopes and stated to pose a risk in Assos, a district of Ayvacık in Çanakkale, turned into an environmental massacre.
After the rocks fell on the roof of some facilities and on the road in the ancient city of Assos, a report was prepared by AFAD by examining the region. Following the report, which stated that the rocks on the slopes of Assos Ancient City pose a risk, Çanakkale Governorship decided to close the facilities in Assos for 500 days and started the tender process for the project prepared to make the rocks safe.
The ‘project to prevent the falling of rocks in Assos Ancient Harbor’ actually turned into a project to destroy rocks altogether
After the tender process, which was completed last March, the facilities in Assos Ancient City and Ancient Harbor were closed for 500 days. It turned out that the rehabilitation works, which started with the name ‘Project to prevent the falling of the rocks in Assos Ancient Harbor’, turned into a massacre of the environment and history with the images taken from the sea yesterday. In the published photographs, it was seen that almost all the rocks and vegetation on the slopes of the Assos Ancient City were destroyed during the rehabilitation works, which was initially for the removal of dangerous rocks and repair with steel nets. It will be clear in the coming days whether new rent areas will be opened there or not.
