According to formal education statistics released by Education Ministry, the quality gap between public and private schools are growing more and more. There are averagely 25 students in a classroom of a state high school while this number is only 10 in private high schools. The radical difference in student numbers effecting the quality of the education prevails more obviously in kindergartens with an average number in a classroom differing between 50 students in state-schools and 7 students in private schools.
AKP rulership has been mostly investing in and promoting Islamic Divinity Students High Schools/ “Imam Hatip” High Schools, Private Schools hence enhancing the education gap throughout the years. The decreasing value of the education in the state-schools made the private education an inevitable option for the students, yet only the wealthy could afford that. Private school have been thriving and becoming a trend especially after the failed “4+4+4” system in 2013. The number of the private schools before this system was 5 thousand 942 now the number has doubled itself to 13 thousand 870 schools. In addition, the number of students in private schools went from 613 thousand to 1 million.
“7 million students are being educated in overly crowded classrooms.”
Mahmut Özer, the minister of education also complained about the crowded classrooms. He stated that: “According to the statistics there are 850 thousand classrooms across Turkey and 26 percent of them have more than 30 students.”
