The increase in food prices in the summer continued in September as well. In September, food prices increased by 2.1 percent compared to August. The annual increase in basic food prices was 37.6 percent. The September 2021 results of the “People’s Inflation” research conducted by KAMUAR, the R&D unit of the United Public-Business Confederation, based on a basket of 76 items consumed the most, are announced.
The aim of the “People’s Inflation” research is to reveal the extent of real inflation experienced by fixed income earners, wage earners and the poor, who have to devote most of their income to food and have no protection against inflation.
48 percent increase in sunflower oil
According to the research, there was an increase of 36.8 percent in bread, flour, bulgur and pasta prices, 22.4 percent in meat-fish prices, 28.7 percent in milk and dairy products and egg prices in September 2021 compared to a year ago. Oil prices increased by 48.2 percent, fruit prices increased by 79.3 percent, vegetable prices increased by 61.7 percent, pulses prices increased by 32.4 percent and other food prices by 12.7 percent compared the last year.
Fruit prices increased by 83.9% in the 9-month period
There has been an increase in basic food prices this year by 3.6% in January, 2.8% in February, 2.5% in March, 2.3% in April, 1.8% in May, 1.1% in June, 4.2% in July and 3.5% in August. Increasing prices continuing with a rate of 2.1 percent in September. As a result, the number of citizens who have to live below the hunger and poverty line are getting more and more every day. In the research, an 83.9 percent increase in fruit prices in the last 9 months drew attention.
