Union Stewards in 7 cities stated that precautions against the virus are more than just disinfectants and masks yet no notice is taken. They warned that the schools will be shut again if the situation continues.
There have been only 2 weeks since the schools are opened. “Precautions against Covid-19 in Schools” was published by Education Ministry, yet it has no valid action in schools at the moment. There have been problems of absent cleaning staff, hygiene and crowded classrooms.
Teachers and students left defenceless in the face of the virus. A safe and clean environment in schools are not provided regardless of the demands from the parents, teachers and students. Teachers are warning that even the dual education system that is on MEB’s carpet now will not be a solution: “Sources for education should be increased, MEB should deal against the pandemic specifically. We support and know the importance of the face-to-face education. MEB should take more solid actions for the future of children.”
Ankara: There is no social distancing
According to a teacher in Ankara Çankaya, the precautions in the schools are nothing but masks and disinfectants: “ Air conditioning and cleaning staff in the school is insufficient. It is nearly impossible to provide social distancing in these crowded schools. The responsibility to handle the precautions is on school management only, just like any other school in Turkey.”
İzmir: Schools are not clean enough
More than 50 classrooms are at quarantine in İzmir. Tens of teachers and nearly 300 children are Covid-19 positive in İzmir. Necessary action is not taken. Eğitim Sen İzmir talked about the issue:
“There is no active project against the pandemic, or to change the insufficient conditions. It seems impossible to fight against the pandemic. There have been 83 damaged schools in İzmir after the big earthquake. These schools are merged with others, and we went for dual education; yet, cleaning in between of morning and noon students is impossible.”
İstanbul: The problem is growing
Face-to-face education in İstanbul, the most crowded city in Turkey, is hardly continuing. Even in the first week, tens of classrooms switched to online education after Covid-19 cases. Parents’ new choice is private schools upon seeing the insufficient conditions at state schools. The number of students in classrooms go up to 35. This situation is mostly seen at school districts where socioeconomic conditions are disadvantaged. Parents blamed school management, and the management claimed to be left alone with no support from the Ministry.
