The Washington administration will formally meet with Taliban representatives in Qatar on Saturday for the first time since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
The US State Department announced that the US delegation will meet with Taliban representatives in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Saturday and Sunday. It is known that unofficial contacts were carried out with the Taliban administration during the withdrawal process of the US troops. However, it will be the first time that the parties will officially meet around a table.
A spokesperson for the US State Department made statements:
“In this meeting, we will ask the Taliban to respect the rights of all Afghan people, especially women, and to form a government that is supported by all and represents all groups in the country.”
Drawing attention to the economic difficulties faced by Afghanistan and the possible humanitarian crisis, the spokesperson continued: “We will demand that humanitarian aid organizations enter the country more easily.”
The US State Department also noted that this meeting did not mean that Washington recognizes the Taliban.
